Reports suggest that the woman had been running a successful eatery, serving food made from human flesh to unsuspecting customers. It is alleged that she had been abducting and killing children in order to prepare her meals. Shocking images of malnourished children have surfaced online in connection with the case.
Meanwhile, a human rights group has brought to the attention of the UN Security Council a harrowing story of a woman who was twice kidnapped, raped, and forced to cook and eat human flesh by rebel groups in the conflict-torn east of Congo.
The woman had been taken captive by CODECO militants while attempting to pay a ransom for a kidnapped family member. She recounted how they had slit a man’s throat, removed his entrails, and demanded that she prepare them for consumption.
She was eventually released but was then kidnapped and abused by another militia group who also forced her to eat human flesh. The woman, who eventually managed to escape, shared her traumatic experience with the Female Solidarity for Integrated Peace and Development (SOFEPADI), a women’s rights group led by Julienne Lusenge, who addressed the Security Council on the matter.
The second militant group responsible for the woman’s ordeal was not named. The UN Security Council had convened to discuss the escalating violence in the Congo, which has resulted from clashes between the government and rebel groups since late May.
